Gluster Launches Continuous Data Replication for Public and Private Cloud Storage

Gluster Launches Continuous Data Replication for Public and Private Cloud Storage
Type: News

Gluster, a provider of scale-out, open source storage for public and private clouds, announced the general availability of GlusterFS 3.2.

According to a release, this latest release includes Continuous Data Replication, which enables multi-site data protection for public and private clouds. In addition, the update includes enhanced multi-tenant management for public and private clouds, with usage quotas and new monitoring tools for improved visibility into I/O operations profiles and performance statistics. Version 3.2 of Gluster is available for the full line of Gluster solutions, including those for public clouds (the Gluster AMI and Rightscale Template) and private clouds (the Virtual Storage Appliances for VMware, KVM, and Xen, and the recently announced Gluster Software Appliance). The open source version of GlusterFS 3.2 was also released to the community.
Gluster's software-only storage solutions give enterprises the ability to treat physical storage as a virtualized, standardized and scale-on-demand pool in much the same way they treat computing resources today, radically improving storage economics in the process. Gluster frees enterprises from the constraints of proprietary, monolithic storage architectures by enabling them to create scalable, high performance, and highly available storage either in the public cloud or on their choice of commodity hardware within the data center. Gluster delivers fully functional, fully POSIX-compliant storage solutions that pool storage resources under a global namespace, delivering high availability, linearly scalable performance and capacity, as well as elastic volume management, which enables data growth and migration to be managed with no downtime.

"As an increasing number of companies are moving into the implementation phase of cloud computing, they are quickly realizing the crucial role storage plays in ensuring the deployment is successful," said George Crump, president and founder of Storage- Switzerland. "The latest product release by Gluster includes a number of key features for more effective business use of cloud storage, including continuous data replication, making the decision easier for enterprises to employ cloud computing in their overall IT strategy and within their enterprise data centers."

The company noted features of the new 3.2 release:

-Geo-Replication - providing continuous, asynchronous and incremental replication service from one site to another over local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and across the Internet. Only incremental changes are replicated, eliminating the need for snapshot-like copies of whole files or volumes. In addition, 3.2 features intelligent asynchronous replication in which GlusterFS tracks changes to the primary data and replicates in real time across a WAN. Changes are tracked and queued to ensure data stays synchronized regardless of latency or potential network interruptions.

-Accessible usage quotas - with the ability to set quota on usage of disk space by directories or volumes. Storage administrators can control disk space utilization at the directory and/or volume levels with Gluster by setting limits to allocate disk space at any level in the volume and directory hierarchy. This is particularly useful in cloud deployments to facilitate the utility billing model.

-New monitoring and management tools (Gluster Top and Profile) - that provide familiar monitoring and statistics capabilities for I/ O operations and performance statistics. Gluster Top presents the top 100 operations per server, providing visibility into the I/O workload pattern. Gluster Profile provides performance statistics over a user-defined time period for metrics including latency, number and type of calls, and amount of data read or written.

"Gluster has long believed that storage must change radically to match both the architectures and economics of the cloud," said Ben Golub, president and CEO at Gluster. "With this release, we not only provide the fastest path to public and private cloud storage, we also provide a powerful set of tools for connecting public and private clouds."

"Since we announced our Storage Appliances in February, we have received extremely positive feedback from our customers and the community," said AB Periasamy, co-founder and CTO of Gluster. "We continually strive to enhance our solution and make it as comprehensive as possible for public and private cloud, such as adding these new data replication and management capabilities."

FED:Labor plays down bad Galaxy poll=2

Labor backbencher Andrew Leigh said polls don't matter.

"Polls two years out from an election have no predictive power," he told Sky News.

Meanwhile unnamed shadow ministers and backbenchers have told the Canberra Times there
is angst in opposition ranks over Tony Abbott's leadership style and paranoia about being
double crossed.

The paper reports Mr Abbott has little trust of his front bench, some members of his
team think he is making too many unilateral decisions and his populist stances often fly
in the face of party policy.

Victorian Liberal senator Mitch Fifield dismissed the report as "bizarre".

"It sounds like complete rot to me," he told Sky News.

"Tony has an open-door policy with his colleagues."

Mr Abbott always had made himself available to discuss policy issues.

"He's a very inclusive leader and has the party's full support," Senator Fifield said.

Fed: Worst terrorist plot on Aussie soil foiled, four arrests

Fed: Worst terrorist plot on Aussie soil foiled, four arrests

By Melissa Jenkins, Greg Rule and Michelle Draper

MELBOURNE, Aug 4 AAP - Counter terrorism raids have foiled what could have been a deadly
suicide attack on Australian soil.

In a seven-month joint investigation, police uncovered an alleged plot by men of Somalian
and Lebanese descent to storm the Holsworthy Army Barracks in Sydney, home to several
thousand troops, and launch a suicide shoot-out.

It is alleged there had also been suspicious activity around other Australian Defence
Force bases, the details of which have yet to be revealed.

"Police will allege that the men were planning to carry out a suicide terrorist attack
on a defence establishment within Australia involving an armed assault with automatic
weapons," Australian Federal Police Acting Chief Commissioner Tony Negus told a packed
media conference in Melbourne on Tuesday.

"The men's intention was to actually go into the army barracks and to kill as many
soldiers as they could before themselves, they were killed.

"Potentially this would have been, if it had been able to be carried out the most serious
terrorist attack on Australian soil."

Some 400 AFP and Victoria Police officers launched raids at 4.30am (AEST) on properties
in suburbs in the Melbourne's north, inner city Carlton and Colac in the state's southwest.

They arrested four men, who are all Australian citizens, and are interviewing several
others. The arrested men are a 26-year-old Carlton man, a 25-year-old Preston man, a 25-year-old
man from Glenroy and a 22-year-old man from Meadow Heights.

They are expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court later on Tuesday.

Mr Negus said the investigation involved a massive electronic and physical surveillance
operation. Further investigations were being conducted both in Australia and overseas
and more arrests have not been ruled out.

The men were seeking a fatwa, or religious ruling, to justify their plot, and it is
alleged some of them had travelled to Somalia, Mr Negus said.

He said police believe the men were linked to a group called Al-Shabaab in Somalia
and had been supporting the Islamic insurgency there.

Al-Shabaab has been declared a terrorist organisation by the United States.

Police will use Commonwealth anti-terrorism legislation to charge the men.

The Australian newspaper learnt of the investigation last week and agreed to hold off
on publishing the story until Tuesday.

But the paper hit Melbourne streets about 1.30am (AEST), some three hours before the raids began.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner said he was disappointed with the newspaper and
state and federal authorities would investigate the leak.

"This, in my view, represents an unacceptable risk to the operation, an unacceptable
risk to my staff," he said.

Mr Overland said police would speak to Islamic leaders in Melbourne on Tuesday to reassure
them of their continuing support.

"It's also important that I reassure the broad Islamic community here in Victoria that
we understand that the overwhelming and vast majority of people of Islamic faith are not
terrorists," he said.

Mr Overland said the 19 search warrants being executed could take more than 24 hours to complete.

The counter-terrorism operation, dubbed Operation Neath, involved officers from the
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, AFP, Victoria Police, NSW Police and the
NSW Crime Commission.

Fed: Business must contribute to society, say unions

ADELAIDE, Aug 22 AAP - Big business, like the rest of society, has a responsibility
to strive for equity and justice in the wider community, the South Australian union movement
says.

SA Unions secretary Janet Giles said that with careful consideration and good policies,
it was possible for the whole country to share in the wealth generated by major corporations.

"The bigger the company and its profits, the bigger its opportunity to contribute to
the community around it," she told a conference on social justice, government and business
in Adelaide today.

"Companies like BHP Billiton, which this week posted a $17.6 billion profit, have a
huge capacity to contribute and work to show the world that a socially just mining boom
is achievable."

Ms Giles said it was a simple principle of exchange - if somebody wants something,
they should give something in return.

"A company wants to dig up our resources, the community wants to share in that wealth
via jobs," she said.

"The people of South Australia should not simply be fodder for exploitation.

"We're not asking business to be a charity, but to invest in opportunities for the
community it exists in, and that community will repay it with a strong workforce and vibrant
economy that can buy its products."
